As some in Charlotte continue to argue about the importance of mammograms and who should have these and when, some patients who have tested positive for breast cancer would like to be heard.

One patient was just 35 years old when she had her first mammogram  which showed she had cancer. This mammogram was supposed to be what is referred to as a baseline mammogram. It is what is used to compare future films so that a physician will be able to determine at a later date if a patient has cancer.

Because this patient was found to have cancer at a young age, many are questioning the wisdom of postponing mammograms until the age of 50. Cancer may occur at any age between birth and death. Those who say the earlier mammograms are not needed are using statistics that show the age of the average person who may have cancer.

The most recent information for last year shows that in 2009 there were approximately 192,000 new cases of breast cancer in women, with almost 2,000 cases of breast cancer in men. Studies show that early detection is one of the most important tools a cancer patient has.

Insurance policies often cover yearly wellness physicals which include mammograms for women. However, because men may also have breast cancer, they should be aware that a lump in the breast area should be checked by a physician.

Preventing illness is cost saving for everyone concerned. In the case of breast cancers in men and women, no study has listed a preventive measure that works for everyone. Screening for early detection often allows cancer patients to learn about their situation while the cancer is stage 1 and easier to treat.

According to charlottedrs.com, breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer in women. After lung cancer, breast cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in women. Anyone looking for a doctor in Charlotte may want to use Charlotte Doctors link below this article.

The importance of having the option to have a mammogram might be limited in the new health system. I could never understand limiting diagnostic programs for good health processess for detection. Tx for the awareness of the debate still going on for age onset.Eugene, Oregon Dogs Examiner
