Flossing for longevity and a Recipe to promote tooth health

Apart from flossing as being good oral hygiene, it may allow people to live longer, healthier lives.

Flossing daily reduces the level of bacteria that contributes to the cause of gum disease.  When flossing daily, the level of this bacteria is decreased in the bloodstream and the risk of heart disease is reduced.  Source: Mind Body Fitness

Certain foods are more beneficial than others. Cavity causing foods are those that leave a film on teeth such as starches and sugary products.

Calcium rich foods such as nuts and yogurts help to maintain healthy teeth.  Cashews, peanuts, almonds, and walnuts are especially good.  They are high in magnesium and some contain oleic acid.  Oleic acid is found in olive oil which not only contributes to oral health but offers overall nutritional benefits as a healthy fat.

Here is a recipe for fighting tooth decay and it was formed based upon a recipe by Maureen Kennedy Salaman from her book "Foods That Heal".

Nutty French ToastAn egg less, vegetarian friendly version of French toast.  Delightfully light and very nutritious, using multi grain English Muffins.  Whole wheat bread may also be used.  Serves 6

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cups water
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (Use cashews, peanuts, almonds, or walnuts)
  • 5 to 6 pitted dates
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 3 Multi Grain English Muffins - split in half
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups fresh berries (blueberries, raspberries, etc.  Red seedless grapes are pictured above).

Directions:

Preheat the broiler on high and place the rack about 4 " from the heat source.  Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with aluminum foil and spraying with non-stick cooking spray.  Using a food processor or blender, puree the water, nuts, dates, and salt until mixed smooth, about 1 to 2 minutes.  Dip the muffin halves into the mixture and place on the prepared baking sheet.  Put under the broiler for approximately 2 minutes and when brown, turn over and broil the other side until brown, 2 to 2 1/2 minutes. Watch closely so they don't burn.  Enjoy with fruit on the top.
