NEW CAFETERIA PREMIERES AT SWEDISH AMERICAN HOSPITAL

  • July 17th, 2010 9:30 pm CT

Swedish American Hospital has upgraded an already fine dining facility, unveiling it on July 15th. The redesign of the 26 year old facility is called “The Commons,” and features a “top-your-own” bar, featuring menu items like nachos and baked potatoes, and stations for deli, grilled food and brick oven pizza.

In the morning, a warm cookie station draws employees and hospital visitors alike. An island “world station” displays preparation of an “entrée of the day” as patrons watch. The Jackson American Food Examiner comments that hospital dining, far from the jello and oatmeal reputation it has enjoyed, now attracts families on limited budgets seeking quality fare.

OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, one of the three Rockford hospitals, opened its new dining facility a year ago, calling it “Anthony’s.” OSF is currently in negotiations with Rockford Health System to merge their two hospitals. See that story here.

Serving hours are 6:30 am to 7:00 pm daily. Food services director Kathleen O’Connell has received very positive feedback on the changes. The cafeteria serves 1,100 people a day.
