Miami Dolphins quarterbacks Pat White and Chad Henne were both injured in today's game against Pittsburgh. Pat White, injured with a concussion from a head-to-head impact with Pittsburgh Steeler's Ike Taylor, came in for Chad Henne, the Dolphin's starting Quarterback. Chad Henne had to leave the field early in the game with an eye injury.
Concussions and head injuries in sports
According to the Sports Concussion Institute, 10% of athletes in contact sports such as football or soccer suffer a concussion every season. Concussions are very common, due to the nature of the sport, but should not be discounted. Brain injuries can be extremely severe, and additional injury can cause even more severe damage.
Common eye injuries in sports
In football, eye injuries can arise in the event of a lost helmet/faceguard, or from a forceful impact. The most common type of eye injury in sports is blunt trauma. In this type of injury, an strikes the outside of the eye, causing trauma to the eye if smaller than the eye socket, and causing trauma to the surrounding area if larger than the eye socket.
