Police in Kahta, Turkey say they have recovered the body of a 16-year-old girl they say relatives buried alive in a so-called "honor" killing as punishment for talking to boys.
Turkish police found the girl's corpse after following up on an anonymous tip. The tipster told police that the family killed the girl shortly after deciding her fate at a family council meeting. Her body was then buried under a chicken pen.
The girl's family then reported her missing to the police. Police say that the girl had complained two months earlier that her grandfather beat her for talking to boys.
Police, who identified the girl only by her initials, M.M., said she had significant amount of soil in her stomach and lungs, indicating she had been buried while still alive.
"The autopsy result is blood-curdling. According to our findings, the girl - who had no bruises on her body and no sign of narcotics or poison in her blood - was alive and fully conscious when she was buried," one source reported.
Police have arrested the girl's father, mother and grandfather. The mother has been released, but the father and grandfather remain in jail awaiting trial.
The case is expected to bring highlight the issue of so-called "honor" killings in Turkey. Official statistics show that more than 200 such killings occur each year, accounting for nearly half of all murders in Turkey.

honor? killing the innocent in such a tortuous way? i see no honor. only shame.
That killer monster is NOT Turkish he is Kurdish, Kurds are NOT Turks they have different language and ethnicity, that city while it is a part of Turkey is located where called Kurdistan, honor killings are part of Kurdish culture, unfortunately there are still few people in rural areas that have not been assimilated by Turkey.
Its very amusing how foreigners like to continously point out that Kurds are a distinct race who have being "oppressed" by the "oh-so-evil" Turks, but when its comes to barbaric things like "Honor Killings" (a fully kurdish phenomonen), they are labelled "turkish" like in this case. Cut the crap
so now i wonder, out of the 200 "honor" killings, how many were Kurdish families and how many Turks? that would be an interesting and relevant detail. if all of them are Kurdish, then maybe the Turks getting unfairly blamed is a kind of karmic payback for the fact that the Kurds don't have their own country. Turks own it, so it happens in Turkey and the Turks get the blame. yep, probably karma at work.
I just like every one to know these are Kurdish people who do this and many in Europe workers are Kurdish people who reperesent themself as Turkish, these are not TUKISH in Europe many Europians talk bad about the Turks should ask them if they are Kurdish l bet they are, Turks do not do this to their children
I'm a Turkish woman living in Turkey. This is Kurdish culture at its best. Turkish families and Turks would not do this. The Turkish state has been trying to bring civilization and development to these areas but has met armed rebellion backed by Western powers. This is partly YOUR creation...
And Turkish women don't wear veils as seen in the picture. Majority, like myself, dress in modern clothes in the cities. In rural areas and in poor districts, many women cover their heads, but NEVER the face. Please change that picture which looks very unreal...
oh yeah, right. partly MY creation? what a load of crap, Belgin. Turks took the land to civilize? Uh uh, that's like saying Africans were enslaved to "civilize" them for their own good. Well if the purpose is for the Turks to civilize the Kurds then I'd say they're doing a pretty lousy job of it. maybe the fact that there are armed rebels has to do with the fact that they want their own country. the ball is now in your court, Turkey.
Why dont we address the real issue here... the fact that women and girls are being treated as if they are less than human today in 2009. It is sad that the commentors on here care more about the people who did this being called Turks vs. Kurds. who cares what the ethnicity is. The point is a young girls was killed for NOO reason... Why dont you people get that???

what the hell is this honor thing? if they can do this to a young girl, what will male Turks do to their own women when they violate some ancient canon that shouldn't even exist in this modern world.
What abysmal journalism skills the author of this article has! No time, place or ethnic background has been reported. Telling half the truth is still not telling the truth.
Shame is the perfect description. I have a sister that unfortunately married an egyptian man in the 80's. He has oppressed her and mentally destroyed who she was. Now she is a slave to his control. He has turned their two sons against her and destroyed her very soul. She has no confidence and is told what to wear, what to eat, what to say, and made to do menial tasks as peel oranges because the man is too lazy and feels the chores are beneath him. Why am I saying this? Because he is muslim and it all plays into how women are treated by middle eastern men.
Aren't these the same Kurds that Saddam Hussein gassed in the 80's, and the USA rushed in to rescue with "Iraqi Freedom"?
And now thanking the USA for their "Freedom" to go back to doing this kind of stuff!?
I also believe that this is a shame, but there is something wrong in this news. People doing such kinds of silly thigs are not Turkish people, they are all Kurds. You have just one point of view and believe everything without criticizing. Turkish people never do that. Be logical and improve your critical thinking skills!!!!!
