Cape Wind, a healthy move, approved as nation's first offshore wind farm

AP/ Peter Dejon

What will become the nation's first offshore wind farm, off Cape Cod, has been approved by the Obama Administration. Given the new reports on climate change, the environment, and our health -- this is welcome news to supporters. Cape Wind Renewable Energy Installation Approved

The battle has been an uphill one as detailed in Cape Wind: Money, Celebrity, Class, Politics, and the Battle for our energy future on Nantucket Sound.

Additionally concerns about asthma and other respiratory illnesses have been a concern in the state: Strategic Plan for Asthma in Massachusetts 2009-2014

Wind farm approval

Regarding the victory, the Union of Concerned Scientists says "Today is a turning point for New England in which we can start to turn smokestacks into wind turbines," said John Kassel, president of Conservation Law Foundation. "It is fitting that Massachusetts, which has no coal or oil of its own to burn, should be first in the water with offshore wind, a carbon-free energy source which we have in abundance. With Secretary Salazar's decision, we are ready to bring this project to completion at last and give the nation a glimpse into its clean energy future." Favorable Cape Wind Decision Paves Way for American Clean Energy

Health risks of carbon dioxide outlined

"A Stanford scientist has spelled out for the first time the direct links between increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and increases in human mortality, using a state-of-the-art computer model of the atmosphere that incorporates scores of physical and chemical environmental processes. The new findings, to be published in Geophysical Research Letters, come to light just after the Environmental Protection Agency's recent ruling against states setting specific emission standards for this greenhouse gas based in part on the lack of data showing the link between carbon dioxide emissions and their health effects.Study links carbon dioxide emissions to increased deaths

Additionally here is a recent report about climate change: Earth Day report: climate change is endangering our health. As such, a move towards clean energy and clear air appears to be a move in a healthy direction.
