The bacteria were first named after an outbreak of pneumonia following an American Legion convention in Philadelphia during the mid 70’s. This bacterium thrives in warm water. Therefore, it can be found in whirlpool spas, hot tubs, air-condition units of large buildings with cooling towers, and water used for drinking and bathing.
It is important to note that most people who come in contact with these bacteria do not become ill. The more vulnerable groups for this type of infection are the elderly, smokers and those suffering from chronic lung disease.
Legionella is not passed from person to person. The infection can come from breathing in a water mist or breathing vapor or steam from contaminated water. This vapor carries the bacteria directly to the lungs where it can multiply and cause a form of pneumonia that is called Legionnaires’ disease. Although it can be a very serious illness and can cause death, most cases can actually be successfully treated with antibiotics.
In the case of Miami’s Epic Hotel, the health department has reported that the chlorine level in the water sampled from the hotel was below the level recommended to curb bacterial growth. The hotel has stopped accepting guests until further notice.
