Rich Products Corporation expands recall of sponge cake

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported "Rich Products Corporation expanded its voluntary recall on January 12, 2012, of Vanilla Pre-Soaked Sponge Cake to include the 8” Vanilla Flavored Pre-Soaked Sponge Cake Artificially Flavored." This recall has been anounced in a firm press release which has been published online by the FDA.

Rich Products Corporation, which is located in Buffalo, New York, is the world leader in non-dairy toppings, icings and other emulsions. The firm also makes cakes and desserts; pizza, bakery products; breads and rolls; shrimp and seafood; appetizers and snacks; BBQ; meatballs and pasta; and gluten-free and all-natural items.

Last week, Rich Products Corporation expanded a January 5, 2012 recall of ¼ Sheet Vanilla Soaked Sponge Cake Artificially Flavored to include the 8” Vanilla Flavored Pre-Soaked Sponge Cake Artificially Flavored (Product Code: 62938) due to the possibility that small plastic fragments from the packaging were contaminating the product.

There have not been any customer complaints or reports of injuries related to this product received by Rich Products Corporation. This voluntary recall has been issued by Rich's as a precautionary measure. The recalled product is produced by Rich’s in Ocoyoacac, Mexico, and is imported into the U.S. by Rich’s for sale. The UPC code for the recalled product is: 00049800629387 and includes products produced after July 10, 2011.

All of its distributors and customers who have received the product in question were contacted by the firm on January 12, 2012 and directed to remove and destroy the affected product. All of the other affected product under Rich’s control has been quarantined and will be destroyed.

Rich’s discovered the problem with this product was caused by a change in the resin used by the supplier of the plastic packaging. Rich’s had not been made aware of this change. The firm has been working closely with the supplier to ensure that all defective packaging is removed from distribution and that all monitoring systems are in place to eliminate the potential for this problem from occurring again in the future.
