15 year old Louisa Ball is known as a "Real Life Sleeping Beauty" due to a sleep-inducing disease. Kleine-Levin Syndrome, also known as Sleeping Beauty Disease, is a neurological disorder that primarily affects adolescents, and subsides without treatment.
What is Kleine-Levin Syndrome?
This neurological disease affects adolescents, causing grogginess and excessive sleeping. While the two conditions affect sleeping habits, Kleine-Levin Syndrome is not related to narcolepsy. This condition comes and goes in cycles, causing a victim to spend long periods of time sleeping, waking only for necessary bodily functions. According to the Kleine-Levin Syndrome Foundation, there is no known cause for this disease.
Sleeping Beauty Disease Symptoms
Sleeping Beauty Disease causes both physical and behavioral symptoms. Physical symptoms include grogginess, drowsiness, hypersensitivity to light and sound, and lethargy. Behavioral symptoms can include confusion, apathy, childlike reactions, food cravings and hypersexuality.
