How to Prevent a Heart Attack

Surprising to many, heart attacks have become the leading cause of death for both men and women. Caused by a variety of factors, cholesterol-clogged arteries have brought billions to their knees by blocking the blood supply to the heart, eventually starving it of oxygen and causing irregular palpitations. This accumulation of plaque is a direct result of dietary selection and it takes years to create, but there are multiple things that can be done to prevent it and to help you recover from its life-altering effects.

First, you must maintan a healthy diet. Roughly 1.2 million Americans suffer from coronary infarctions annually, and almost 40 percent of people who experience the chest clutching, heart racing event die. Don’t join the club. If you find yourself living on fast food, engorging on meats, and feasting on cheese, you are in for a rude awakening. The first thing you will need to cut back on is fat and cholesterol, meaning foods like bacon, ham, cream cheese, and cheddar should be eaten in moderation. These items have an innate ability to narrow the arteries to your heart, and sodium can actually raise blood pressure. Switch from soda, teas, and other sugary drinks to water. They all supply unneeded carbohydrates and often make you thirstier. Also, make fruits and vegetables part of your everyday meal. High in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, these each supply your body with much needed nutrients while preventing corrosion of the coronary arteries.

Another valuable asset is exercise. Recommended in all shapes and sizes, exercise is a miracle worker. It can add years to your life, rejuvenate the spirit, and reawaken the heart. It can also reduce cholesterol, control diabetes, maintain blood pressure, and even help you lose weight, but little results will be seen without full participation. Understand, you don’t have to run a marathon or join the swim team to keep things in check. Your exercise plan can be as simple as a 30 minute walking plan, yoga in the living room, or playing fetch with the dog. Your heart just needs to be pumping and the body needs to be moving. Too often we find ourselves sitting still, mesmerized or distracted by the worries of the world. Get outside! Go to the park with your kids or meet up with friends to get back in shape. Just make sure to find time everyday to get the blood pumpin'.
