Animal rights activists upset about monkeys that glow in the dark

Earlier this week, Japanese scientists released news of genetically engineered marmoset monkeys that glow in the dark, causing concern among animal rights activists. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is questioning the morality of such research.

While many scientists see this research as a breakthrough and look to the future of genetic engineering to develop cures for human neurological disease, the RSPCA believes monkeys that glow in the dark is creating false hope that medical cures are coming soon. Too few monkeys have been created with the ability to glow in the dark, so it is too soon to state this method is not without problems. The RSPCA also argues that the caging of animals in laboratories causes unnatural suffering. See the RSPCA’s opinion on monkeys that glow in the dark.
