There are currently 4 potential candidates to take over the Congressional seat left vacant by the death of Sen. Edward Kennedy.

The leading contender would appear to be Massachusetts’ Attorney General, Martha Coakley. Most polls have her leading by a wide margin over her 3 other rivals.

Would not support the House health care bill

In a recent campaign ad, Attorney General Coakley said she would not vote for a health care bill as proposed by the House. She is concerned what she believes are restrictions on abortion coverage. This stance could help her with female voters but could turn off voters who are desperate for health care reform.

Capuano agrees with Coakley

Rep. Michael E. Capuano is also running for the Kennedy seat. Currently a representative

The only candidate with Congressional experience takes the same position on the abortion issue as Ms. Coakley  but has not be as vocal about his stance.

The 2 other candidates are Alan Khazei, co-founder of a national service program, and Stephen G. Pagliuca, a co-owner of the Boston Celtics. Both have said they would support the health care reform bill as proposed.
