Tattoo removal: How Angelina did it, or maybe it's just time to make a change

Brad's in, Billy Bob's way out.  What's a girl to do when the last love of your life is tattood on your arm, but you've traded up, moved on, or just gotten bored? Laser surgery may just be the answer you've been looking for.  It worked for Angie!

A common problem with tattoos is dissatisfaction.  You may decide that the tattoo no longer fits your current image or that the once-stylish design has become dated. Some tattoos fade. If the tattoo artist injects the color too deeply into your skin, the dye can drift — causing a blurred design. Maybe you have left your last love whose name was "Fabio" and now you're with "Mike", who doesn't like to see a previous partner's name every time he looks at you. Or maybe you've decided to go into a line of work where the letters "DEATH" don't look good on your knuckles, especially if you want to go to medical school.

Well, now that's a problem because tattoos are meant to be permanent, so their complete removal is difficult. Several removal techniques exist, but regardless of the method used, scarring and skin color variations may remain. Methods include:

* Laser surgery. This is the most common way to reduce the appearance of a tattoo. Pulses of laser light pass through the top layer of skin where the light's energy is absorbed by the tattoo pigment. This process creates a very low grade inflammation and allows your body to process the small areas of altered pigment. You may require many treatments to lighten the tattoo, and the treatment might not completely erase it.  This was Angelina's method of choice, which worked pretty well as you can see.
* Dermabrasion. The tattoo area is chilled until numb, and the skin that contains the tattoo is sanded down to deeper levels. This generally isn't painful, but it may leave a scar.
* Surgical removal. A doctor can surgically cut out the tattoo and stitch the edges back together, but this can leave a scar.

Do not use do-it-yourself tattoo removal creams or products sold online. They aren't FDA-approved and may cause skin reactions. If you're interested in tattoo removal, don't attempt it on your own. Ask your dermatologist about laser surgery or other options for tattoo removal but leave the scrub brush alone.

Dissatisfaction with tattoos is not, as the author asserts, 'common'. Statistically, approximately one in eight individual experiences regret about their tattoos. However, 'tattoo regret' runs the gamut of reasons for people far beyond simply wishing they had never gotten a tattoo in the first place.

By a large margin (60%) the single greatest cause of 'tattoo regret' is body art that includes the name of a former love interest. Few of us wish to be continually reminded of affairs that did not last or work out, particularly if we have moved on to another relationship. Love lasts forever, but a tattoo lasts six months longer!

However, many also people regret that they chose tattoos that were too small, or the individual picked the wrong location for the design. You may love the tattoo design, but displaying it on your hands or neck is almost certainly going to effect your employment opportunities and career choices.

Body art styles do change over time, and there is no denying that tattoos are among the worst 'impulse' purchases of all time.

And technically, tattoo pigments are neither injected, nor are they dye. Tattoo needles are solid and tattoo ink consists of pigment particles suspended in a carrier solution. Line blurring in a tattoo, or blowout may be caused by the tattoo artist going too deep, but is far more likely to be caused by an improperly set-up machine and by tattooing areas of skin that are designed to crease, such as hands, feet, the inside of wrists and elbows and armpits.

Tattoos and body art are an increasingly popular form of self-expression. They are also permanent and difficult and expensive to remove. The decision to get a tattoo should be one that is well thought out and with an eye to the future.

I went to a body art shop and found a skilled and concerned artist who used a "brander" to remove a quarter (yes, 25 cents~!!) sized star from under my right eye/right cheek to hairline. I have had one session done, and after the terrible recovery time of 2+weeks and lots of tedious care.....I am very pleased with the results. I think it has been worth the turmoil, having come out the other side. Bottom line.....yep, my shor-sighted, artistic impulses are regretted now. Thanks, great info. From.... Kim C.'s sister, Kelli
