Book review: The Stress Eater Diet

Learn how to deal with stress in your life
-- and in your diet, with the Stress Eater Diet

Just in time for Women's Health and Fitness Day  (Sept 30), we've got the lowdown on a new book aimed at helping women battle the bulge by taking aim at emotional eating caused by stress: Stress Eater Diet: A Simple Guide for Women Who Want to Stress Less, Lose More and Look Fabulous!

The health risks of chronic stress have been well documented -- from sleep disorders to a weaker immune system to depression and more. Add emotional eating -- which, the authors say, affects an astounding 50-85 percent of the population to one degree or another -- and you've got a recipe for much unhappiness.

And that's where the Stress Eater Diet comes in.

The 215-page book, by Robert B. Posner, M.D., and Linda Hlivka, is not intended as a "quick fix" kind of book. In fact, the authors want to help the reader achieve permanent behavior modification. Thus, it includes info on, say, stress-relieving exercises (like squeezing a stress ball), calming techniques (like taking up yoga), or re-learning how to eat (like weighing yourself weekly). It also contains useful tools such as a 10-question Stress Eater Quiz (which is also available online), as well as informative "Stress Less Tips" (for instance, the fact that getting less than six hours a night of sleep can make you hungrier -- not to mention causing a host of other physical problems!).

And, of course, there's the book's sections on nutrition, which provides information about which vitamins and minerals are important, what  foods to avoid, and what specific foods can relieve stress (turkey and bananas, sure -- but also mackerel, Brazil nuts and liver!)  -- as well as an easy-to-follow Stress Eater Meal Plan.

Bottom line: More than just a diet book, this book offers realistic and useful guidelines on living a healthy lifestyle in today's unhealthful, high-pressure, high-stress world!
