August 10th is designated as Aspirin's birthday on several every day holiday calendars. One hundred and seventeen years old today, the common aspirin is considered the first "cure" available to modern man, and the most popular analgesic throughout history (according to the Guinness Book of World Records). The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates was first documented as prescribing the bark and leaves of the willow tree, rich in salicin, as a pain reliever and fever reducer. It was not until 1899, however, that the Bayer Company was providing physicians with aspirin for their patients to treat mild to moderate pain, fever and inflammation.
In addition to reducing pain, fever and inflammation, aspirin works to prevent clots from forming in blood vessels, thereby helping to prevent heart attacks and strokes. The 81 mg formulation has become a very common means of promoting heart and circulatory health. As with any medication, starting an aspirin regimen for cardiovascular health should be under the supervision of a physician. Aspirin is not appropriate for everyone, particularly children (due to the risk of Reyes Syndrome) and hemophiliacs.
