The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning not to consume frozen mamey fruit pulp sold under the La Nuestra and Goya brands. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) demonstrated a link between nine current Salmonella typhi infections and the frozen mamey fruit pulp products.
Consumers who have the either of the recalled brand's frozen mamey pulp should discard the products immediately. Both products retail in 14-ounce packages. All lots of both brands are subject to the recall. Consumers are also advised to ask what brand of mamey products are used in beverages and smoothies prepared at juice stands or stores.
Infections with Salmonella Typhi cause typhoid fever, a serious illness that can result in death. Sustained fever as high as 103° to 104° F can be experienced in addition to general weakness, stomach pains, headache, or loss of appetite. To determine if illness is due to typhoid, samples of stool or blood need to be tested for the presence of Salmonella Typhi. Seek immediate attention from a health care professional if typhoid is suspected.
