Why books make the best gifts

Anatoly Tiplyashin Dreamstime.com

October is national book month. Whether you prefer a traditional print book or an e-book, today’s varied methods of publishing and distribution have made more titles available than ever before.

Books or book seller gift certificates make the best gift for any occasion. A book is still one of the most inexpensive and long-lasting gifts you can give. When you give someone a book, you’re giving them more than an item; you’re giving them an experience.

Here’s what a book can do for you or a friend:

• Teach you something (i.e.: history, biography, cooking, self improvement).
• Entertain you (i.e.: suspense, drama, romance).
• Help you pass the time (while waiting, sick or commuting).
• Give you an escape; a much needed break from everyday life.
• Encourage sharing; pass on a book and give the gift that keeps on giving.
• Simulate your brain (i.e.: eyes, motor skills, memory, intellect).
• Go with you, anywhere.
• Get a conversation started (friends, book clubs, social networks).

Did you ever consider that the ability to read a book is a gift itself? According to the Education for All Global Monitoring Report (GMR – 2009), there are 776 million illiterate adults in the world. And in the U. S. alone, statistics released by the U.S. Education Department in early 2009 show that 32 million adults lack basic literacy skills.

Don’t let your gift go to waste. Keep reading and buying books for yourself and others.
