Toronto - A new poll recently released shows that Toronto mayoral candidate, Rocco Rossi, has gained considerable support from voters. However, Rob Ford still holds at least a commanding 12-point lead over his opponents.
Toronto mayoral candidate, Rocco Rossi, has a lot of support from voters for proposed voter recall plan, which allows Torontonians to fire the mayor or a councillor before their four-year term is up if they do not live up to their promises.
A new Forum Research poll shows that 73 percent of voters support the recall power. The highest support for the idea was in Etobicoke, York and North York. This has also put Rossi higher in the polls where he is sitting at third place with 15 percent.
Forum Research posed the question: “In between elections if politicians are not living up to expectations and aren't getting the job done, the taxpayers in some cities across North America have the power to recall their politicians or remove them from office if they are not happy with them. Do you believe this is a power that Toronto taxpayers should have or not?”
Despite Rossi’s gain in the latest poll, frontrunner Rob Ford is still in first place with 34 percent, while George Smitherman continues to be placed second with 22 percent, Sarah Thomson is fourth with 11 percent and Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone is in last with 11 percent.
A deciding factor could be the fact that 33 percent are still undecided.
The telephone survey was conducted among 400 randomly selected Toronto voters between Aug. 30 and Aug. 31. The poll contains a margin of error of +/- 4.9 points.
