The National Citizens Coalition [NCC] wants the “Hated Sales Tax” to die a quick death and have called upon the Liberal Party to defeat the framework legislation on the Harmonized Sales Tax [HST] next week.
“Opposition Leader Michael Ignatieff has a choice. He can play cozy with Dalton McGuinty and Gordon Campbell, or he can do the right thing for the people,” said Peter Coleman, CEO and president of the NCC.
The NCC estimated that the new HST will cost Canadians an additional $800 to $1,000 annually.
The coalition said the HST is widely unpopular and will end up costing seats for the political parties who support it.
“The HST is highly unpopular with consumers in both provinces. It's a political hot potato for both parties and will cost them seats. The federal Conservatives and Liberals both know that if this tax goes through, they will pay the price in the next election,” Coleman said.
The governments of B.C. and Ontario have committed to harmonizing their sales tax earlier this week.
The NCC said that provincial governments in both provinces “would rake in billions of dollars a year,” if the legislation is approved.
