Juno-Award winning R&B artist Haydain Neale of Jacksoul died on November 22 at Toronto’s Mount Sinai hospital following a “very private seven months battle with lung cancer,” a family statement said Monday.
He was 39.
Neale won the 2001 Juno Award for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year.
“On a beautiful, sunny morning with his wife Michaela, daughter Yasmin, brother-in-law Shawn Hudson and friends Davide DiRenzo and Jennifer Hyland by his side, Haydain passed away peacefully,” the statement said.
"Through all these challenges, Haydain's sense of humour and love of music were ever-present. He constantly brightened the room with his singing and his smile. His joyful presence and beautiful voice will be missed by us all," his wife, Michaela, said.
The Hamilton-born Neale was the lead singer of the Toronto band, which was known for resurrecting classic soul hits.
The band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2004.
Neale had always maintained a positive spirit throughout his life, even throughout rehabilitation following an August 2007 accident on Kennedy Road in Toronto.
Neale is survived by his wife, Michaela, his daughter, Yasmin, along with many family and friends.
An interment along with a private family ceremony will take place later this week.
