Free ride ending for dangerous drivers

Hillsborough County has some of the worst Florida drivers.

Florida's accident-prone drivers are going to face some new restrictions come January, thanks to a new law signed by Gov. Charlie Crist.

And given that Pinellas and Hillsborough counties have the third and fourth worst drivers in the state, statistically, it may make for safer traveling in the future.

The law requires that any motorist convicted of three crash-related violations in a three-year period to take a behind-the-wheel education course and pass a driving test.

Even though the tabulation of violations won't start for another six months, Florida has pegged more than 3,200 drivers who already fall into the most dangerous category.

Kevin Bakewell of Tampa's AAA Auto Club South in Tampa, welcomed the new law.

''For some people, paying a fine for violating a traffic law does not serve as a disincentive,'' Bakewell said in a St. Pete news report.

According to the report, state officials say 3,277 drivers were involved in 10,281 accidents during the most recent three-year span, with nearly 600 having at least one DUI.

Miami-Dade has the most dangerous drivers, followed by Duval, Pinellas, Hillsborough and Broward counties.
