Mayor Newsom directs say no to soda: Another Northern California city bans soda on public property

asdf
Mayor Gavin Newsom directs another Northern California city to ban soda from vending machines on public property. Following a similar Santa Clara policy passed in 2008, San Francisco institutes a ban on soda. The ban will include regular soda, sports drinks and artificially sweetened water. Diet soda can be sold but can be no more than 25% of the type of beverages offered. Juice can only be in the vending machines if they are 100% fruit or vegetable juice with no added sweetners.

Following a similar Santa Clara policy passed in 2008, San Francisco institutes a ban on soda.

The SF Gate reports, "Coca-Cola is out and soy milk is now part of San Francisco's official city policy" to describe Mayor Gavin Newsom's directive to bar "calorically sweetened beverages from vending machines on city property".

The ban will include regular soda, sports drinks and artificially sweetened water. Diet soda can be sold but can be no more than 25% of the type of beverages offered. Juice can only be in the vending machines if they are 100% fruit or vegetable juice with no added sweeteners.

A representative from the California/ Nevada Soft Drink Association states they are expecting complaints.

Just because the lovely mayor chooses not to drink soda or sport drinks does not make his ban right. He can require healthy alternates to be sold but I beleive the soft drink industry has a case under FTC that this is selective enforcement and it aims to restrict free choice for the owner of the cafe on city property to sell what they legally choose to sell. Heavy handed government. This guy has his sights on running for the state governor too!

the government controls u by allowing chemically engineered and over processed food onto the grocery store shelves to be consumed- despite the fact that all those preservatives, fake sugars and processed food cause cancer and diabetes- it is a fact!! but the FDA makes way too much money from Dow, Bayer and other chemical companies that make the chemicals found in ALL non organic or whole foods- the government is poisoning the people by not restricting over-processed and aspertine laced foods on the consumer market!!THANK YOU Santa Monica and San Fransisco I hope this is just the beginning of the trend!

Wow. This is a stunner. Another idiot liberal trying to mandate our lives to be what HE thinks it should be. Isn't this against free enterprise?? What is the response form Coke or Pepsi? They have the right to sell their products where there is a demand. This is another power grab. MY GOD I'M SICK OF THIS!

For as long as I can remember the rest of the country has laughed at the silly people in California, but increasingly the dim-witted antics, and their disasterous economics are changing the image of California from a joke to a national embarrassment. Like a spoiled child who never grew up, California flounders in a corrosive combination of ignorance and arrogance.

Isn't it amazing that elected officials think they can get by with anything in the public interest. An unnamed and loose consortium of dentists, doctors and otherwise "healthnuts" form a power grid of whinings and complaints to legislate their utopian vision of mandated health reform.

I think we should require a needed boost in intelligence for this possessive crowd like banning power drinks and Italian/French coffees, mandating mega vitamins intake and solving daily MENSA puzzles. Oh, we are required to buy their insistence that they make up the intelligent elite? Yeah right!Get a life, faker-bakers(LOL)! Golly gee whiz, the moral majority has come back from their 1950s' mentality, Ma.

I say, if they are gonna ban it, they ought to at least know the reasons it's so bad. The sugar is just one thing. The oxidation in soda is one of the major players in what's killing us! Reducing it to allow just 'diet soda' is CRAZY. Diet soda is worse for us than regular soda.

for Cathy Go :"owner of the cafe on city property" this scenario is not possible as the cafe owner would still have the right to sell any beverage s/he chooses. However; a vendor on city property (think hot dog cart in the park) or vending machine would fall under the new ban.

People know their body temperature should be 98.6 but few know that their blood pH should be 7.365 to be healthy. Soda is 2.5 the same as battery acid. Here is a demo with the real scope of it. Kangen4u.h2Origin.com
