Tax critic Michael Moore applies for Michigan tax subsidy

Director Moore

Michael Moore has been a critic of state tax credits for Hollywood films.

The Mackinac Center for Public Policy, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research and educational institute focusing on issues in Michigan, checked with the Michigan Film Office and learned a production individual from Moore's 'Capitalism: A Love Story' had applied for tax credits in Michigan where a lot of the film was made. Ironically, the story was based on corporate greed.

We have all seen Moore on talk shows espousing his disdain for large corporations and Wall Street banks receiving government handouts. Moore was absolutely against government tax subsidies for private business.

Michael LaFaive, fiscal policy director at the Mackinac Center, "While we don’t blame Mr. Moore and his production team for taking what is offered, it’s striking that a movie focused on the inequities of granting taxpayer dollars to private enterprise would apply for and receive taxpayer-funded incentives."

It was only a year and a half ago when Moore was preaching just the opposite, "These are large multinational corporations — Viacom, GE, Rupert Murdoch — that own these studios, why do they need our money, from Michigan, from our taxpayers, when we’re already broke here? I mean, they play one state against another, and so they get all this free cash when they’re making billions already in profits. What’s the thinking behind that?”

Edwards used campaign gifts to fund his love child, Pelosi wastes $100,000+ for each flight she schedules and cancels, Rangel walked away from tax evasion, Dodd did not blink at Countrywide..., what makes this liberal group feel the the rules they champion simply do not apply to themselves?
