The 2010 Olympics Opening Ceremony is going to be tape-delayed. That's right, West Coast viewers can't watch the Opening Ceremony live, even though the 2010 Winter Olympics are being hosted in the same time zone. The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony is scheduled to begin right around 6:00 p.m. PST on Friday, February 12th, 2010. The NBC coverage of the event though, is not schedule to begin airing until after 7:30 p.m. PST.
For those fans of the Olympic Games on the West Coast who thought that they might finally get to see an Opening Ceremony live, this is going to come as a big shock to the system. It's ridiculous that NBC can't just give live coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies, but instead that want their West Coast viewers to tune in at 7:30 p.m. PST and stick with them through midnight. It's just another way for NBC to abuse their broadcasting rights, and a frustrating step in the wrong direction for the network.
The West Coast typically has to suffer through tape delays of award shows, but to take an event that is happening in the same time zone and force people to wait is just going too far. NBC is telling the state of Washington that even though Canada is right there, and that many residents are mere minutes from where the 2010 Winter Olympics are taking place, those viewers don't deserve to watch the Opening Ceremony live.
It speaks pretty loudly about how little faith that NBC has in their network to attract viewers at 6:00 p.m., and it's such a shame that they are trying to take advantage of viewers in this fashion. You can probably assume that the broadcast will try to play it off like viewers are seeing a live picture, but everything you see from the Opening Ceremonies will edited, cropped, tape-delayed, and re-arranged for "your entertainment."
The 2010 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony begins at 6:00 p.m. PST on Friday, February 12th. NBC coverage gets started at 7:30 p.m. for Spokane viewers who can watch it on NBC (KHQ)

waaaaaaaa!!! try living in Hawaii.
there's no fixing stupid................
This is just moronic. I am going to make an exception and watch a few minutes of the opening ceromonies in HD on NBC, only because I can't get CBC in HD. god I hate these idiots.
Maybe it should be someone that the President speaks up and talks about how it is a shame that corporate America is now thinking what is best for the people. America sends it's Olympic Athletes to the 2010 Winter Olympics only to now be held hostage by NBC and their moronic executives (the same one's probably that decided Jay Leno was no good for the Tonight Show). Why is NBC trying to make it inconvenient for us to view the Olympics LIVE?
I was born in Canada and I remember the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics vividly. They were show LIVE throughout the day. If you had to work, so what. You watched them at night. The Olympics move too fast and offer so much we don't need to have them postponed until we can get home to watch them. So I'm suppose to live my life on 4 hours of sleep a night?
I will watch my Olympics online. I'm sure someone will have them streaming live. To Hell with NBC.
Thank God I moved to Canada.
Their so called high tv ratings late at night are immensely flawed. First, they thought people actually watched Conan. NOT. People would fall asleep to Leno and leave their tv on. Satellite and cable companies report what you watch back to the pollsters. NBC gets a hold of all of these great numbers of carry over viewers and thinks... HEY lets show it later and later at night. Maybe even when the drunks get out of the bars and get home and pass out in front of the tv with a final beer in hand. YA THAT'S IT! LMAO
Can we get PBS to air the Olympics next time? It might be all done from 2 camera angles but at least it will be live. Maybe we can get YouTube to broadcast it... (could be a real idea in that).
bill, its on CTV in Canada, in glorious HD
Try living in Hawaii? I will in two years, thank you very much. And I won't care all that much about the commercialized Olympic Games when I do. (Sort of defeats the point of moving there.)
It must be so difficult for you...
Hmmm, what's odd is that the NBC coverage Eastern time also starts at 7:30 PM. I wonder how that will work if the actual ceremonies aren't starting til 9 PM Eastern.
Many folks will be watching Canadian coverage here in Washington!!! But I like to watch both. Can't get enough for sure no matter what channels are showing it. LOVE THE OLYMPICS!!!
We won't watch any tape delayed coverage on NBC. We will READ about the games LIVE on ESPN. We will not support the idiots at NBC, which can't go out of business too soon!
Interesting I can understand sometimes keeping things from the east coast on a taped schedule like voting and such but this is kinda silly.
7:30pm - 9pm is a preshow.. actual starting time is 9pm for the Westcost for the opening ceremony.
there's a live feed on the internet, so try surfing that out!!!
I hate NBC!!!
NBC Boycott!
this is weird, not able to view the opening ceremony
as much as we complain about CBC in Canada ...all we have to do is look at american network television...the worst of which is network news....to realize how bad the koolaide is and how misinformed the american public are
Works for me. I work until 5:00 PM anyway. =P
When the media controls what we see and when we see it, isn't that what they do in North Korea and Iran. Have NBC execs been taking cues from the crazy leaders of these regimes. I think it would be a no brainer to say that most people on the west coast would prefer to watch the broadcase stream live in their own timezone. NBC should be ashamed of themselves. It makes me sick to my stomach that we have no other choice.
No - No Don't boycott NBC BOYCOTT THEIR ADVERTISERS !!! :))
I just tuned in to see the Glorious Opening Ceremony. And NBC excitedly tells me..."The opening ceremonies..we'll get to that later...for now there is DEATH. YES DEATH. "
And then I get to see movies of DEATH.
More DEATH.
Stories about how sad it is.
I am wondering if anywhere on this planet there could possibly be a more obscene and sick way to introduce the 2010 Olympics. Canada, what did you do to pith NBC off? They have ruined your ceremony.
I am sick at my stomach...and I will never watch more of this.
I was so looking forward to watching an olympic opening ceremony live for once. Looks like I will have to buy NBC and dismantle it. Why is it that NBC has all the broadcast rights for the US? I would like to see CBS and ABC show the olympics too. We all know that one entity cannot cover every sport equally well. I would like to see the olympics divided among 5-10 broadcasters...preferably 4 on non cable networks and another 6 on cable.
NBC sucks - I hope they go bankrupt. Please consider this an official curse!
I can't believe this! Where can I watch on line?
F U NBC
STUPID IDIOTS AT NBC. CNN SHOULD TAKE OVER ALL SPORTS ACTIVITIES.
It seems that Canadians are under the impression that their country is something to be proud of. I ask all the Canadians here why so many of you leave your country and work in the US and yet there are hardly any Americans who come to Canada in search of work. You Canadians must be proud of making the low rated shows Flashpoint and Sanctuary.
what the heck NBC. not only is this not fair to viewers on the west coast, it literally makes no sense! additionally, I am tired of hearing about Lindsey Von and her injuries and her apparent position as "the face of these olympic games"- honestly, lets try to focus on all athletes, not just her. there are some really amazing stories out there and i'm tired of the hourly check in with her! really wishing that CBC had the contract
NBC...are you @#%! kidding me. Honestly...if you can't broadcast live, don't broadcast at all. Your judgment and coverage are beyond pathetic. NBC...just you wait. Your day will come.
This is Ridiculous!! Not only is it tape delayed it is Now 8:38PM and they are still doing all of this Preshow crap so it is not even scheduled to air until after 9:00pm. NBC you are blowing it big time! I sure wish there was some Alternative so we could show NBC what we think of them.
I remember the days where you could watch these things on multiple networks
i am so disappointed. NBC your discription says opening ceremonies at 7:30pm pst. its 9pm now and still no opening ceremony. so much for getting my kids into the olympics. thanks alot. jerks
NBC Terrible, worst in the World!!!
It's a shame! NBC sucks. A world event about fairness and fairplay to be treated with such disrespect!!!!
Not much else to add to this but it's totally disgusting. What is NBC thinking! Come on. This is 2010 when we can see things live regardless of where it is. (If it was a war we'd be seeing it live!) Why can the east coast watch it live & we can't. Unbelievable.
Going to bed now in SF. NBC- No Broadcasting Conscience -Failed me this event.
Most disappointing to have opening ceremony time delayed.
This forced my wife and two young daughters to stay up after midnight to watch it.
I recorded the opening, went to bed and watched it this morning. Then had the pleasure of zipping thru the ads.
In a nut shell,
NBC can get stuffed!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank-you NBC - I would have spent many hours watching live Olympics in the same time zone. Now I can check the event results online as well as video of highlights and medal ceremonies then use my time to read and grade papers... So - how's that time delay workin' for ya? Gettin' all the viewers you anticipated, are ya?
What a joke. NBC has to be the worst network ever.
The IOC real made a mistake in selling the games to NBC. We folks need to write the IOC and maybe they can put some pressure on NBC. They don't know how to schedule a talk show, why would anyone think they could do justice to the Olympics?
Delaying one of the biggest live sporting event by 3 hours is nothing but asinine.
They are the 4th rated network and there are real reasons for that - they are incompetent idiots. They made a conscious decision (more like unconscious) to delay the broadcast to the West cost by 3 hours purely for financial reasons, never mind what was best for their customers wanted. Then they lied and said this is what are customers want. If any body believes that, well there are a couple of good bridges I'll sell you cheap.
NBC deserves to be 4th in fact hopefully they will get every last feather plucked out of peacock.
They had a chance to get me as viewer at least for 16 days but blew that.
F NBC you've lost another potential viewer here
"You Canadians must be proud of making the low rated shows Flashpoint and Sanctuary."
yeah those are not the best shows in the world...but you guys seem to have your own. Jersey Shore, Big Brother....
We can say that a nice big chunk of A-list movies are filmed here in Vancouver.
Xfiles, Xmen, Twilight, Fringe, House (pilot), Supernatural, Battlestar, Imaginarium of doctor parnassus, Shooter.....the list goes on and on.
All the Saw movies are filmed in Toronto...
Theres a reason Vancouver is known as Hollywood north. Awesome filming locale, exchange rates, government tax credits and the many studios and local professional crews.
A lot of those are funded in part or in whole by your American companies...so thanks for the $$
This is what you call Power And Control. Just like everything else the world.
This is not about basing Canada....this is about a stupid arrogant network and thinks Americans are stupid and need to be spoonfed everything. We, here on the West coast, can't even get NYC New Year's live nor the Thanksgiving day parade....oh and you better watch out, Comcast is buying NBC - you just thought you were dictated to before - wait until after that sale goes through.
If you have fast Internet, get yourself a VPN connection at around 6-10 dollars. Use Google to find a VPN provider in Canada. Then, set your browser to ctvolympics dot ca and watch all the live coverage, with fewer commercials.
If you want to complain to a human being, start with this NBC flack. Chris Mccloskey has been parroting the 'studies and surveys tell us people want to wait until primetime' to all the west coast media. Tell him what you really think...

to Mike - we canadians are proud of our country for many reasons . Most of your American shows are garbage. Anyway, stay at home - we are doing fine. Just another arrogant american
mouthing off!
Well after reading the comments, we must appreciate the presentation style NBC delivers in. I agree that they should not have postponed the Opening Ceremony for the west coast fans, but look at the way they present the Olympics. They may not show everything, but a lot of the videos are online, exclusively for those who reside in the USA. I just love the "theme music" and other presentation styles of NBC, and the main anchor Bob Costas. He does a great job! Lastly, look what happened to the NBA after they stopped being broadcasted on NBC, they suck now! NBA on ABC and NBA on ESPN suck! NBA on NBC was the best (again due to the presentation style). NBC has such professionalism and a great cast of hardworking people.
I hope the Olympics stay on NBC, and the timings of the programs improve (NBC should hold more channels to cover the various events during the Olympics, instead of cutting some events out). I also hope NBC does not change their presentation style as it is so perfect!
Please read the below comment by me first.
