Two infants were killed during a multi-car collision with a gas tanker in Phoenix, Arizona. Ironically, the accident was caused by a car that slowed down to look at a separate collision on Arizona’s Interstate 10. The infants were a 13-month-old girl and a 3-week-old boy. The vehicle responsible fled the scene. This was a case of rubbernecking gone bad.

One of the many rules of the road states that it is dangerous to “rubberneck” at the scene of an accident. While the definition of rubbernecking is to “go about and look at places of interest,” it has become a dangerous action at accident and crime scenes because drivers are too busy looking at the accident and not at the road in front of them. Rubbernecking has cost countless lives since the birth of the automobile and will continue to cause further fatalities until people learn just how dangerous this vehicular behavior is. While highway patrol officers do write tickets for driving too close to another vehicle, rubbernecking is not against the law in itself.

On Saturday, a white or gray Dodge Magnum slowed down to look at a collision that happened earlier that afternoon. In an effort to get a better view, the Dodge cut off a minivan, which braked to avoid a crash with the Dodge. A small sedan, traveling within the same cluster of cars, hit the minivan, which was then hit by a gas tanker. The tanker then overturned on its side. Fortunately, the tanker did not catch fire, which would have increased the number of fatalities greatly.

In the sedan were a 13-month-old girl and 3-week-old baby boy, with the mother at the wheel. The three were critically injured. The two babies died at 3:45 pm after being taken to nearby hospitals. The driver of the tanker truck was unhurt and the driver of the minivan suffered nonfatal injuries.

Law enforcement authorities are looking for the white or gray Dodge Magnum which fled the scene. Contact the Arizona Highway Patrol if you have any information on this case. No further information is available at this time
