After Thursday's announcement from UC Regents that tuition fees would be raised 32 percent, protests broke out all over UC campuses.
Around 5:30 a.m. on Friday UC Berkeley students gathered inside Wheeler Hall and locked themselves in. Some have reported police becoming violent with the protesters, but law enforcement deny those allegations. One thing is for sure though, Wheeler Hall is now quiet.
According to KGO there have been at least 41 arrests, including one professor.
"They are using batons on them. They physically abused them and after that they arrested them," said student Raul Hernandez, according to KGO.
Alex Yaw, the UC Berkeley Police Lt., said he is not aware of any acts of aggression towards the protesters and went on to say that the goal of the police was to resolve the situation peacefully.
UC Berkeley's associate vice chancellor for communications, Claire Holmes, said that a group of administrators, faculty and students tried to talk with the protesters to no avail before police entered the building this morning, according to CBS5.
The regents said they have to increase tuition due to a lack of funding from the state.
