The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued flash flood alerts and wind advisories for San Antonio and south Texas as Tropical Storm Hermine edges toward the Alamo City.

The warnings will remain in effect from 1 a.m. Tuesday, September 7, 2010 to at least Wednesday morning.

Widespread pockets of drenching rain poured in southern counties as the storms northern bands edged their way through Bexar County beginning about 11 p.m. Monday night.

Emergency, utilities and law enforcement organizations prepared for barricading, rescues and traffic enforcement, as weather experts indicate heavy rains, winds and flood likely.

Some areas could receive as much as 8" to 12" inches in the next two days.

Counties, including Atascosa, Bastrop, Bexar, Caldwell, Comal, Dewitt, Fayette, Frio, Gonzales, Guadalupe, Hays, Karnes, Lavaca, Lee, Medina, Travis, Williamson and Wilson expect "numerous bands of heavy showers and thunderstorms to begin moving over South Central Texas," indicated the NWS alert."

"Heavy rainfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour will be possible," the advisory stated. "Widespread rains of 2 to 5 inches are expected, with higher totals of up to 12 inches possibly by midday Wednesday."

"The cumulative heavy rainfall is expected to produce significant rises in area rivers and streams, with the highest threat for river rises expected on Wednesday."

The NWS estimates sustained winds of 20 to 30 MPH are possible, with gusts as high as 45 mph.

"Winds this strong can make driving difficult," advises the NWS. "Especially for high profile vehicles."
