In the Amanda Knox murder trial, the jury was released this morning and is expected to be in deliberation for most of the day, a verdict is expected by the end of the day.
The Italian justice system is different from the US court system, and if convicted, Amanda Knox attorneys have already planned for an appeal process, which would begin before the end of the year. If Knox is found innocent of the charges, then she will be released today. The jury consists of six people and two judges, and they will begin deliberations early Friday morning. It may take up to 12-18 hours before a verdict is reached.
Thursday, Amanda Knox testified in her own defense. She was able to make her own statement and she said “I am afraid of losing myself. I am afraid of being defined as something I am not, and by actions that are not mine. I am afraid of having a mask of a murderer forced on to my skin," Amanda said in a voice that broke quite often.
Know has already spent two years in jail for this crime and said, "I can confess that I feel confused, sad, frustrated."
Knox stated that she has been asked how she has been able to keep from getting depressed in her jail cell, and to that she responded, "In these situations I breathe, and try to find the positive in the important moments." "And I know this moment is one of those moments, because in this moment... a real decision is being made about a fact. It must be understood." To read the Amanda Knox full testimony, click here.
Raffaele Sollecito also took the stand Thursday; he is the ex-boyfriend of Amanda Knox, both of whom are charged in the murder of Meredith Kercher. Amanda Knox and Meredith Kercher were roommates in 2007, and the night that Kercher was killed Knox claims she was at Sollecito’s house.
"I am not a violent person," Sollecito said. "I've not killed Meredith. I was not at the scene of the crime. Every day I hope that the guilty one confesses. I ask you to give me back my life," he said. Sollecito was not questioned by the prosecutor.
The prosecution is asking for a life sentence for Knox and Sollecito if they are found guilty, because Italy does not have a death sentence. The jury may be in deliberations for 12-18 hours, but the verdict is expected Friday.
