PETN explosive used by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, alleged Detroit terrorist on board Northwest flight 253 on Friday. PETN is an ingredient in the plastic explosive, Semtex.
PETN explosive was first created in 1891 by Tollens and Wiegand. It was patented by the German government in 1912 and was used in World War I, according to Wikipedia.
The PETN explosive was also used Richard Reid in 2001 in an attempt to blow up a plane from a Paris to Miami flight on December 22. Flight investigators in Detroit believe that Abdulmutallab carried the PETN explosive in soft plastic or a latex container.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab’s father tried to warn US authorities about his son, the Associated Press reported. But the information provided was not enough to place Abdulmutallab on the no-fly list. The no-fly list is a secret list of people that are not allowed into the US; there are reportedly over 1 million people on the list.
