Friday, President Obama criticized the executives from BP, Transocean and Halliburton at the congressional hearings on the gulf spill who he said were engaged in 'finger pointing.'
Obama also criticized federal oversight of drilling and asked for a review of the environmental procedures, and inspections of all deep-water operations in the Gulf of Mexico.
Friday, Obama promised to tighten federal oversight of the fuel companies and wants a precise appraisal of domestic oil and gas exploration. Obama said that BP, Transocean and Halliburton executives were blaming each other even though there's "enough responsibility to go around."
"That includes, by the way, the federal government," Obama said. "For a decade or more there has been a cozy relationship between the oil companies and the federal agency that permits them to drill."
Obama postponed all drilling for at least 30-days while the investigation is underway.
"We will trust but we will verify," he said about the future of oil drilling permitting process.
Thursday morning, BP released new video of the underwater oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. The video is from the larger of the two leaks on the riser of the Deepwater Horizon well and shows a mixture of oil and gas stream. Thursday, ABC News explained that although it looks as though it might be easily capped, the pressure that would build up because of that cap would most likely cause a leak in another area. Obama’s anger over the oil leak was apparent during his speech and he expressed the concerns of citizens all over the US. A few Utah senators have been trying to get off shore oil drilling suspended while the investigation is ongoing, and this morning President Obama agreed with that.
