The latest installment in the Twilight saga, New Moon, debuted in theaters on November 19th. Utah fans came out in full force to help make the movie the top new box office release. New Moon raked in over $140 million on opening weekend, placing it among the top three domestic releases of all time.
Utahns showed up in impressive numbers to follow the latest adventures of Edward, Bella, and newcomer Jacob (a muscular young man who is also a werewolf). Many local theaters threw opening night parties for fans, complete with celebrity look-a-likes for picture-snapping.
Fans in Utah are so devoted, in fact, that ticket sales from three Utah theaters stand among the top five in the nation. Theaters in Sandy, Salt Lake, and West Jordan held the #2, #3, and #5 spots. Making this data even more impressive is that the rankings are based on total revenue - and tickets in other places (like California and New York) cost a lot more than they do in Utah.
New Moon is the second tale in Stephenie Meyers' Twilight series. The books and subsequent movies have become wildly popular and the fan base they've created is huge. Meyers had not published anything before penning the series and based the first book on a dream she had.
Enthusiasm among devotees shows no sign of waning, with some fans planning to rent entire theaters for the opening night of Eclipse, the third movie which is slated for release in June 2010.
