A Portland public defender was found murdered in her home Tuesday, and police are searching for the killer. At this point they are not sure whether the perpetrator was someone the 57 year old knew or not.
Nancy Bergeson had been an assistant public defender in Portland and Eugene for almost 20 years and previously worked for Salt Lake Legal Defender Association, where she gained the respect of people like Vernice Trease, a state judge for Salt Lake City. Trease said in an interview with The Oregonian: "Whatever it is that she thought was right, and was appropriate for her client, she stood up and advocated for them."
Public service seems to have run in the Bergeson family. Nancy's mother, Marian Bergeson, was once a California assemblywoman, senator, and then California's secretary of education.
