More than 968 passengers were aboard a ferry in the southern Philippines, there are 926 survivors, and nine people have been confirmed dead. 33 people are still unaccounted for in the ongoing search, according the Philippine Coast Guard.
The ferry sent out a distress signal at 3:30 local time, according to Bloomberg.com
“The rescue has gone off very smoothly,” Jess Supan, Aboitiz Transport System Corp. vice president for safety and security, said in a television interview and Bloomberg reported. “The sea is calm and that puts us in the favor of the weather.”
