Thursday, Congress will make their final vote on the unemployment benefits extension and the vote is expected to pass; this extension will allow about 2.5 million Americans to continue their coverage through the end of November.
Wednesday, the Senate voted 59 to 39 to restore unemployment benefits, the bill will move to the House Thursday, July 22, 2010 and is expected to pass.
The unemployment benefits payments would be retroactive back to June 2 (according to the Associated Press), and the government is expected to get those checks in the mail just days after the vote passes. The bill will not cover people who have exhausted the 99 week limit of receiving unemployment benefits.
Once the bill is approved it will move onto President Obama’s office for his signature.
This latest extension would allow unemployment benefits to continue through the end of November 2010. The bill will raise the deficit by almost $34 billion, and would cover approximately 2.5 million people.
Congress voted several times over the past seven weeks and the bill did not get support from many Republicans because they said it added to the US deficit. The No vote sparked outrage from many Americans. Tuesday, Democrats broke the filibuster and voted to move onto a final vote which is expected to pass.
