Raleigh's beloved Elizabeth Edwards is turning in her grave over the latest National Enquirer report where wedding bells between her now widow and Rielle Hunter splashes headlines. But there's something you should know. Let's just say North Carolina's John Edwards is not having a good month, nationally.
Recently John Edwards, presidential candidate and senator, received a reasonable shaft in his wife's will. It is rumored Elizabeth left everything to her three children, 28-year-old Cate, 12-year-old Emma Claire and 10-year-old Jack. Cate was named executor and John, the husband, gaining perhaps a trust in the end. Not trust - a trust.
Yahoo reports Elizabeth "controlled a trust" and John could land as beneficiary. As for the dough-re-mi, moolah, high-end Greenbacks, three feet thick stack of smackers, it is reported that daddy got zilch, nada, nothing.
It could have been the highly publicized hidden affair between John Edwards and Florida native Rielle Hunter behind the literal lack of will in giving John half of everything. It could have been knowing of his love child, 2-year-old Frances Quinn. It could have been the way Edwards may have appeared like a school kid trying to think of ways to change a D into an A. It could have been a multiple number of reasons outside of the affair. And yes, hell can freeze over.
Elizabeth separated from John last year. She was just about to reach her one year separation, which naturally leads to divorce, when she died. Therefore, John and Elizabeth Edwards remain, by North Carolina law, married at the time of her death.
Elizabeth Edwards, mother, author, business owner of "Red Window" and advocate deemed an inspiration to many, including single mothers and cancer patients across the nation. She died on Dec. 7 in her Chapel Hill home.
Raleigh's Edenton Street Methodist Church, the Edwards family church, held Elizabeth Edwards' funeral with the understanding that Elizabeth may have some unusual enemies - the Westboro church group members. Raleigh held their own picket against the picketers and out numbered Westboro by triple digits. A reminder of why I should have watched it on television instead.
Between the raindrops, the cold weather, the snaps of high-end cameras, the feeling of sorrow in loss, the questions would emerge through the packs of crowds. "Will the Kansas Westboro church group return?" "Is homewrecker Hunter here?"
Once a blond exited the Raleigh church during services most heads turned. The sound of retracting cameras could be heard leaving a sense of disappointment. And to look at John Edwards during the funeral was like looking into an empty well.
John Edwards proved to care of Elizabeth - to some extent. He remained with her during the last days as she lost her fight to metastic breast cancer. He also showed up at her funeral. He almost cried - cried. No sign of onions in his pocket during the service last month. But what about the engagement news, too soon?
Most mothers continue to predict that John Edwards would one day ask Rielle to marry him. Call it intuition. Call it a partial educated guess. Call it a false report.
Today the Edwards camp might as well have sent Rielle Hunter fans boxes of tissues. John Edwards engaged? No, the National Enquirer report is as false as calling the opposite sex late at night at a hotel and telling them you can work on their image with only business at mind and actually mean it.
National Enquirer has delivered Edwards news by the ton. Call it good hunches. Call it sharp investigating. Call it a coin flip of revenue. But this one was as much of a longshot as they come. The wedding just isn't happening. For now.
Good news for Raleigh's Edenton Street United Methodist. At least the few Westboro group members aren't going to show up with their children in the cold rain again - or at least nobody needs to worry about purchasing markers to create the "Just Buried" signs.
And it is no secret that the National Enquirer is not the crystal ball to invest in. Sometimes even National Enquirer is human - if you prick them do they not bleed cheap ink? National Enquirer's mild Edwards obsession this time around includes a mommy dearest angle where the Elizabeth's children were told to call Rielle "mommy" - yikes! No word yet on whether the "mommy" portion of the story is also false. Enquiring minds should know in this vulnerable world.
Rielle Hunter's "John Edwards image make-over" pitch actually worked?
Rielle Hunter called up Mr. Edwards late at night following a convenient first-time "you're hot" greeting at a local bar and business. While on Oprah last year the past campaign videographer claimed to have suggested to assist in image damage control. She wouldn't state whether they slept together that night but she did say she ended up visiting him late that night.
It doesn't take a sexual rocket scientist to figure out that chemistry. An affair that would result in their love child. An affair that would add to courtroom drama over alleged sex tapes between Edwards and Hunter. A vision perhaps best kept private for the sake of the family, especially in respect for Elizabeth Edwards.
Raleigh couldn't agree more.
Elizabeth Edwards now resides in Raleigh's Historic Oakwood Cemetery next to her son, Wade. Wade Edwards died in 1996 during his teens contributing from a jeep accident.
And no, John Edwards is not engaged. For now.
