After weeks of anticipation, millions across the nation will be seeing retroactive unemployment checks as early as next week. Others may have to wait as long as six weeks for their benefit check.
The Senate approved the jobless payments on Wednesday and President Obama is slated to sign the bill on Thursday after vote in the House.
Approximately half of those eligible have had their benefits cut off since the unemployment funding expired June 2. Lump sum retroactive payments could appear for some as early as next week. Some states will take longer than others.
MSNBC reported today that states such as Pennsylvania and New York will be sending out retroactive unemployment payments next week.
The Associated Press reports that some states may take longer to get the benefits to those anxious to receive them. Nevada, with the highest unemployment rate in the country, may take a few weeks to distribute payments. In North Carolina, the expected wait is two to six weeks.
Locally here in Rhode Island, the Department of Labor and Training has not updated information on the distribution of checks in the soon to be signed unemployment extension measure. The RI DLT states on their site: Congress is currently considering the reinstatement of the full Federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) Program through November 30, 2010, with benefits retroactive to June 2, 2010. More information will be posted to the DLT web site as it becomes available.
