River and stream flooding continues in many parts of Rhode Island after days of heavy rain and wind. On Monday, Governor Don Carcieri issued a "State of Emergency" for Rhode Island.
Carcieri hopes that federal funds will be granted to help with the cleanup after several stormy days.
All over the state there were evacuations, traffic problems and even crews using boats to rescue those stranded in the floods.
In West Warwick, several homes were evacuated, because of rising waters from the Pawtuxet River. The river has reached a record of more than 14 feet. In some parts of Cranston, residents had to be evacuated from their homes.
The following is a statement from the Governor's office:
"This storm is significantly affecting many communities, businesses and families throughout Rhode Island, particularly in Kent County and the Blackstone Valley region," Governor Carcieri said. "Over the weekend and throughout the day, state and local officials have monitored and responded to the situation. I would like to commend the efforts of the Emergency Management Agency, as well as the efforts or the local emergency management officials, DEM, DOT, the RI State Police, and local police and fire, for the coordinated and consistent response to the storm." Governor Carcieri toured many of the affected areas earlier this evening.
The flood warning that is still in effect will continue until 2am. Rain will continue to fall but a drier day is in store for Rhode Islanders on Tuesday.
