Gulf Oil Spill Larger Than Rhode Island and Boston
Video: BP's Gulf oil spill live feed shows just how bad the worst environmental disaster truly is. Officials say the the massive underwater BP oil gusher is now estimated to be twice the size of the Exxon Valdez disaster and the biggest in U.S. history. Meanwhile, it is still too early to tell if the "Top Kill" procedure will work, said Obama Thursday at a White House news conference.

In an article by ANDREW C. REVKIN for the New York Times, "Try the Gulf Oil Slick on for Size" puts the saying, "Size Matters" into perspective. The Google Map above shows the entire state of Rhode Island engulfed by the oil spill. Providence, Boston and Hartford are completely shadowed.
Interactive Google Mapping Tool
The Web site Beowulfe.com has added an interactive Google mapping tool that lets the user superimpose the current dimensions of the Gulf oil stain on their home town (or any other spot chosen around the globe). The Google map is the brainchild of Andy Lintner, of Royal Oak, Michigan, who created the site. Lintner wanted to make the ever-growing Gulf Oil slick real when it came to his own town.
Gulf Oil Spill Takes up All of Rhode Island and Most of Southern New England
The Gulf Oil Disaster, as some are calling it now, is not only bigger than Rhode Island, but also takes up a good portion of Connecticut and Massachusetts, including Boston, Providence and Hartford. It is so big that depending on where you scroll the mouse on the Google map, it stretches from the Atlantic Ocean spilling just inside New Hampshire. To put it in perspective, strategically placing the spill over the Google map of New England, the Gulf oil spill covers a sizable chunk of Southern New England.
Obama's Daughter: 'Did you plug the hole yet, Daddy?'
When President Obama mentioned his daughter's interest in the Gulf oil leak during the conference, he said, "You know, when I woke up this morning and I'm shaving, and Malia knocks on my bathroom door and she peeks in her head and she says, 'Did you plug the hole yet, Daddy?'" This Google mapping tool would be one way to explain to children – and adults – just how big the Gulf oil spill really is using their own state as a measurement.

Fishing Boat Sinks Near Providence, Rhode Island Leaking Fuel
Meanwhile, Rhode Island almost had their own gas/oil spill and disaster yesterday, May 27, 2010, when two men were rescued just before their fishing vessel sank in the Harbor of Refuge off Point Judith, R.I. The Providence Journal reported, "The Coast Guard rescued two people from a 51-foot wooden fishing boat off Point Judith after the vessel began taking on water and sank Thursday, according to a news release from the Coast Guard in Boston."
The top of the "Lucy M" mast was visible off Roger M. Wheeler State Beach, and was surrounded by a 60-foot by 15-foot sheen of fuel and/or oil leaking from the fishing boat. A DEM spokesperson said the commercial fishing vessel was carrying about 50 gallons of diesel on board when the boat sank. The two men rescued were not injured and the boat was not insured. Read more about it at the Providence Journal.

I only have on thing to say about this the top kill will not work , BP does not want it to work.
If BP stops this well from leaking then this is a dead well and no money is made.
They are stalling until the two relief wells are finished to offset the cost of the damages.
If BP stalls until these relief wells are done then they will make enough money on them to pay any damages that are awarded.
If they stop this well from leaking before the relief wells are finished then it is a dead well and all damages will come directly out of there pocket.
Think about it.
It is not to hard to figure it out.
Chirsgoat, excellent comment, I can't add anything...
@Chrisgoat: Interesting, that never crossed my mind... Food for thought indeed.
the first pics the map the black oil slick shape looks like a dragon strangling an eagle.deeply prophetic if u ask me
(the eagles head is just above boston near lawerence)
I know it's extreme but I think the only way they can stop the oil leak is to nuke it. It would fuse the ground and seal the leak. In the long run the nuclear contamination would be less than the Oil contamination. We have been plugging holes in the Earth a long time and I think this one is going to bite us in the ass, hard!

I agree huge explosive operation would relieve the pressure if performed over miles of the oil steam bed. Then the leaks could be better sealed because the new leaks would be of a managing PSI. But to drill more holes with pressures upwards of 8000 psi is crazy. We could easily end up with 3x the oil spill!
