Apolo Ohno has won the bronze medal in the men's 1000m final Saturday night, making Winter Olympic history. Winning his seventh medal makes him the most successful U.S. winter Olympian in history, topping Bonnie Blair's six medals.
Lee Jung-Su of South Korea won the gold medal in the 1000m final. His teammate, Lee Ho-Suk took home the silver.
The first U.S. medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics was earned on February 13 by Apolo Ohno who earned a silver in the 1,500-meter short track.
Apolo Anton Ohno, 27, is an American short track speed skating competitor and a seven-time medalist (two gold, two silver, three bronze) in the Winter Olympics.
Ohno is now the most decorated American athlete at the Winter Games. He is one of only four Americans who have won three medals in a single Winter Olympic games. He has been the reigning United States’ champion since 2001 and has won the men's national title a total of 12 times.
Closer to home, there are two Rhode Islanders in the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, although not in speed skating. Karen Thatcher, who played hockey for the Brown and PC women’s teams, is skating for the U.S. women’s hockey team. Kelly Clark, born in Newport, is a snowboarder with the U.S. Olympic ski team.
