U.S. Representative Chellie Pingree has almost certainly made a fool of herself.
It was reported yesterday that Pingree—a democrat from Maine—recently taped a segment for Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” that will air sometime in the coming weeks.
The Comedy Central program features the satirical Stephen Colbert, who sells himself as a caricature of bellicose right-wing pundits (think Bill O’Reilly or Sean Hannity of Fox News fame) as he barrels through a half-hour of news reports, commentary, and interviews.
Pingree agreed to sit down for part of the show’s long-running segment titled “Better Know a District,” in which Colbert has been attempting to interview each representative from the country’s 435 congressional districts.
Pingree says she is a fan of the show and claims she knew what she was getting into, which will probably make her appear wiser than some other congressmen and women who seem to have fallen for the deft comedian’s shtick. Still, she admits that tricky editing by the show’s producers could easily make her look foolish.
Colbert, whose show has been a staple of late-night television since its debut in October 2005, is famous for making venerable figures look like buffoons. He’s displayed this talent in 64 installments of “Better Know a District,” but it was best exemplified at the 2006 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner when Colbert openly derided President George W. Bush, who sat only a few feet away from the comedian. If you’re unfamiliar with Colbert’s ironic style, you should check out this clip:
