A tropical storm that has already dumped heavy amounts of rain on the Caribbean islands of Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba may intensify this weekend and head for the United States in the Gulf of Mexico.
Forecasters with the National Weather Service said the storm still has a 40% chance of turning into the seasons first named storm, Alex, before it decides which direction it wants to go in. The weather, winds and warm waters of the Gulf are helping the storm make its way to the Gulf Coast states.
Forecasters fear the storm could make its way through the Gulf early next week and may help the oil leaking from the Deepwater Horizon disaster move closer to states like Florida and Alabama that have been working hard to prevent the oil slicks and tar balls from washing ashore.
The National Hurricane Center said the storm is moving in a northwesterly direction. And while it is too early to say what the storm will do any wind or hard weather could affect the oil in the Gulf of Mexico. The fear is the oil could be moved to Texas, which until now has managed to keep clear of the oil.
