Deltona Man Convicted of Trying to Solicit Sex With a Minor Online

A Deltona man has been convicted on multiple charges stemming from a cyber-sex sting conducted earlier this year by authorities in St. John's County.

Alvin Brian Smith Jr. was one of 17 people arrested and charged with soliciting sex with a minor through a parent over the internet in a multi-agency investigation called "Operation Sheepdog."

Smith was found guilty by a jury in St. John's County Monday on charges that included using a computer to seduce or solicit a legal guardian or custodian of a child, traveling to meet a minor after use of a computer to solicit a parent or legal guardian of a child and unlawful use of a two-way communication device.

Smith will be sentenced on January 10th and faces a maximum of five years in prison on two of the charges and a 15-year term on the other charge.

Smith was accused of traveling to St. Augustine in April to have sex with an adult female and her 14-year-old niece after responding to an online ad. The woman Smith contacted was actually an undercover sheriff's detective with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
