Former Governor David C. Treen's body was returned to the State Capitol today to lie in repose. A small ceremony was held that ended with a 19-cannon salute.
Treen died on Thursday, October 29, 2009 in at East Jefferson General Hospital due to complications with a respiratory illness. Treen was 81 years old and served as governor of Louisiana from 1980 to 1984. His body will lie in state at the State Capitol through Tuesday, November 4, 2009 for the public to pay respect.
Many people gathered today to pay respect to an ex-governor that was known as ""Mr. Keep-It-Clean-Treen". Among them were congressmen, representatives, former governors, other political figures and members of the public.
Treen is the seventh person to have the honor of lying in state at the Louisiana State Capitol.
Former Governor Treen is survived by three children, grandchildren and a brother. His wife preceded him in death.
A second public memorial was held afterward in Mandeville, Louisiana, before a private burial.
