Even though BP was able to plug a leak yesterday which has been successfully moving 1,000 barrels of crude oil to a tanker, much damage has already been done to the sea life, which will have an effect on the food chain for years.
Current models are showing that the oil is moving into the loop current that will bring the oil farther to the eastern part of the U.S. Gulf Coast, specifically the Florida Keys and on out into the Atlantic Ocean. One model shows the oil has already invaded the loop, while another model shows the oil is within three miles of the loop. Regardless, this is not good news for Florida.
The models used are from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Navy. The models calculate the current, winds, and the oil spill data.
Samples will be taken later this week to confirm just exactly how far the oil has traveled in the Gulf of Mexico.
Meanwhile, more underwater plumes have been discovered from the spill. This will cause oxygen depletion, which will have a negative effect on all sea life.
How much damage has the BP oil spill done to the ecosystem in the Gulf of Mexico? It's too soon to tell, but we do know it will be pretty bad.
