There's water on the moon. Yes, you heard me right. Water on the moon was found by scientists. What does water on the moon mean? Will water on the moon really make a difference in our lives? These are the questions I sat out to answer.
First off, up until now our lives have functioned perfectly well without having to go in to outer space to see if we can find other water sources. With all of the other things that taxpayer dollars could have been spent on, one has to wonder if water on the moon is significant.
Believe me, it is.
According to Time magazine, water on the moon is necessary if humans ever plan on living on the moon. There would have to be some form of water source, as shuttling water from Earth to the moon would be costly and time-consuming.
Further more, ice on the moon could give scientists insight in to the creation of our solar system. Polar ice has given scientists many indications of how the Earth was formed, and ice on the moon could give even more information.
While water on the moon may not sound like that big of a deal, it really is something that could be the biggest breakthrough we will ever see in our lives.
Tonight, as you are looking up at the starry skies of Nashville, take a good look at the moon and remember - there's water up there.

okey, so im 15 year old and i know more than yu. thats sad. FIRST OFF: they didnt go to find water on purpose, it just happened. SECOND OFF: it is a huge deal that we found water, that means maybe on day oxygen on the moon? its a possibility. and some countrys in the world are VERRY short on water, America is just one of the lucky countrys that has alot. and ONE DAY America will be short on water too, we can only use so much water till its gone, yu do realize that.
LOl lily just lol you have absolutely no idea what your on about really u don't. yes some 3rd world countries don't have good water supplies and yeah at the rate we are going we might find that our drinkable water supply's might run low. but that has absolutely nothing to do with the fact they found water on the moon NONE! to get that water from the moon to us would cost a ridiculousness amount of energy and about your theory on oxygen on the moon a simple frozen water source has not much to do with creating an atmosphere to contain the oxygen in gas form which i assume is what you meant. PS there is already oxygen on the moon "H2o" so i think in no way u know more than the author of this post. keep to your self child and perhaps research things before u make a bogus claim like u have.
Lily, they DID intentionally crash a ship into the moon in order to create a dust cloud and examine that cloud for water. And you're wrong about why they did it. Noone would go through the effort involved to transport water from the moon to earth, that would be inefficient. Scientists are researching ways use the water and other materials found on the moon to build bases rather than transport material up there. There are likely other minerals that are so rare and valuable that it would be cost effective to mine the moon transport them back to earth (for example hydrogen & helium), but water will never be one of them. It would be much more cost effective to desalinate ocean water.
Water water water water :D
will it be "M2o" Moonshine.
When i hear that i can not understand what to do. ho ho
Moon, and Space. The next frontier for mankind!
In the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter we could find all minerals, like iron, gold and water, we needs.
i think water means h2o and o is oxygen so if there is water on the moon it may mean that there is oxygen too so... maybe in the future live would be possible on the moon ??!!!
Wat if humans found water on moon, we havnt been able to save water on earth so how come we think about moon water....I think this was a secret that was revealed by nasa after knowing that other countries may come to know this top secret now.Secondly how could human manage to transport that water to earth...hah maybe rich people. I think a time will come when all the nation build thier capital state on moon and there all the rich people and the diplomats stay.Presidents, priministers, kings etc etc would stay there with thier families.Today rich people are the main source of distruction to earth. millions of gallon of water wasted in a single day just to wash the luxury cars, water the posh gardens and so on.........
Amazing discovery and im 15 and not that damn dumb lilly stay in school for as long as they will keep you

who cares?
many problem here in earth and i will care about the "whater in the moon" oh please.
"im 15 year old"
yeah... that explains it
mandy, yes there is oxygen in water. h2o means one part oxygen to two parts hydrogen. the problem is that it is difficult to seperate the two from each other. just because there is water there doesnt necessarily mean that there is "o2", the gaseous form of oxygen which we breathe. the main problem with colonising the moon is the lack of atmosphere. there isnt any breathable gas on the moon, just nasty gasses like sulphur, and only a really thin layer cause of the little gravity of the moon. sorry to ramble but its something of an answer to you mandy.
This discovery will eventually turn into another "giant leap for mankind." All of this talk about living on the moon or any other planet is just... amazing! On to the other topic, how can anyone say something about poor lilly when ALL of you obviously cannot spell (or type). Case closed.
Alex, Where do you think all this 'wasted' water goes? just because a rich person uses gallons of it to wash their cars doesn't mean it has then disappeared and can't be used by anyone else. If anything the rich people using their cars is creating more water for everyone as its melting the ice caps. Also we don't want to transport the water on the moon to Earth, we have plenty here it just saves us having to take it to the moon with us.
Kyle, separating oxygen from water is easy, if we can send humans thousands of miles through space to the moon i'm sure separating oxygen from water isn't going to be a very big hurdle, besides fish have been able to do it for Billions of years.
Mandy, yes it does make it a lot more possible to live there although we would have to live in some sort of pods as there isn't and atmosphere.
yes james it is easy for us to seperate oxygen from water, but the point i was trying to make is that it is not likely to happen on the surface of the moon all by itself to make for a breathable commodity. fish convert water to carbon-dioxide so they dont seperate oxygen in the sense that i was talking about.
Let's not forget that, as we all know, where there is water, there is life. I'm not saying there's aliens on the moon, although it's very possible there is bacteria and such living in this water, but there is a great potential to create a new eco-system on the moon, which is good news for us. At some point, we could be seeing a new habitat, and if that's the case, the slow progression of moon-occupation is possible. Then again, we're probably looking at another 100 years or so before this would become reality.
Helium three!!! It has been said that the moon holds more energy than all fossil fuels on earth. Only 25 tons of helium three when combined with deuterium for nuclear fussion could run the US and Europe for a year. It is present in abundance on the moon but rare here on Earth. The presence of water on the moon is monumental. It makes mining Helium-3 possible.
Did you know that the space shuttle burns hydrogen as fuel? Did you know that splitting water to make hydrogen produces oxygen? What else do humans need? Freeze dried food and shelter. You would have hot water to bathe, water to drink, hydrogen for fuel, electricity from the pure sunlight on the moon. Hell, you could grow plants for food on the moon in special greenhouses. Forget the freeze dried food! All of this is possible because water is there.
Some meteorites, the so-called carbonaceous chondrites, can contain up to 20 percent H2O. How does this experiment rule out such "water" vaporized at impact?
yeah i dont think they were going to find more water because we are running out but water on the moon is the first step to making another planet that is habitable
After 30 yreas the Americans have suddenly got all exited about Moon exploration again. Many say its because the 2012 prophesy is true and a select few will migrate to the Moon in a vain attempt to prolong the human species. Water means everything !!
I doubt we ever went to the moon....why were a bunch of moon rocks collected from the original missions given out to museums found out to be FAKE??? And after several alleged manned missions...we found 0 water...now 40 years later...were not even sending people to the moon, and we discover water....It sounds like a bunchofbullshit to me...
why???for Years.......old question babababa.......
water on the moon? minerals, like iron, gold and water In the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter? how? why?
*did mankind really put a foot step on the moon???
Dear Nasa`s
Please , Leave Our Moon in Pease .
Why Pollute One More Planet in Solar System..??? should keep that water as reserve and rest our human butts on the planet earth
It would be much more cost effective to desalinate ocean water.
Dhiraj, why do we need to keep the water as a 'reserve'? Why do people not realise that 'our' water is not going anywhere? There is the same amount as there always was, is and forever shall be, apart from the bits dumped by space missions which is negligible.
Imad M Al, Why? Yes it creates tides, winds etc. But everything it does for us now will not change even if we go there and pollute it to the max, and at least its the next step to safeguarding the future of the Human race. Eg. missions to Mars and beyond.
This is truly historical and will probably prove to be the most significant advancement in space exploration of the past several decades.
I am filled with excitement at the prospect we could use the water on the moon to generate a habitable environment on the moon. I don't mean just a contained environment inside a colony, although that's definitely more possible now. What I'm referring to is the possibility of somehow "seeding" the surface of the moon to create a vapor layer (atmosphere) that would insulate the surface and gradually build and accumulate to the point where it retained heat and allowed melting ice to contribute to the atmosphere.
It might take centuries to accomplish (or longer), but the scientific prospects are fascinating and irresistible.
I've started a website to begin collecting thoughts and ideas about "Greening the Moon." If you're excited about this too, spread the word and share your thoughts: www.jumpstartthemoon.com
