Harel calls for public inquiry into construction contracts

Montreal opposition leader Louise Harel will ask for a public inquiry into allegations of corruption in the awarding of construction contracts at the next city council meeting.

The motion will officially call upon the Charest Liberal government to hold an inquiry into the well-publicized claims of embezzlement and collusion that almost cost Montreal mayor Gérald Tremblay the election earlier this month.

Harel also asked that all contracts be reviewed by permanent bi-partisan committees and for the cancellation of the city’s highly controversial five-year water-meter contract with engineering firm BPR.

According to Harel, the motion will in all likeliness pass unanimously. Richard Bergeron’s Projet Montréal party has also announced it intends to pass a similar motion.

In response Quebec Premier Jean Charest has said a public inquiry will not be possible while the Sûreté du Québec is investigating the matter.

The next city council meeting will be held on Nov. 30.
