Sure, the Irish know how to entertain, and what better place for a pair of Altadena boys to put on a show than the evening summer concert series in Farnsworth Park? Catch them this weekend, Saturday, August 14.
Those Manning Boys (that’s their moniker) not only play Irish tunes on traditional instruments, they offer up a variety show with plenty of dancing, singing, and humor. Joining them is Aniar Academy of Irish Dance, led by Christine Byrne.
This is Mike and Sean Manning’s sixth year playing “songs from the public houses of Ireland” at Concerts in the Park. Here’s the rest of the lineup, along with the instruments that will fill the air with haunting melodies and lively jigs:
- Liam Lewis writes music and plays fiddle and mandolin. Liam is heading of to Berklee College of Music in the fall.
- Tim Drake is Altadena's very own uilleann piper and whistle and flute player (sometimes both together). Originally known as union pipes, uilleann pipes are the national bagpipe of Ireland.
- Jimmy Murphy joins the group on guitar. This is his first appearance at Concerts in the Park
- Barbara Schilling plays Celtic harp, and also serves as a music therapist at Duarte’s City of Hope.
The variety show will highlight the diversity of Irish music and the talent of all the performers. And it’s free!
Comedy relief is provided by stand-up talent from the Coffee Gallery in Altadena, and gourmet dinners can be ordered from Amy’s Patio Café.
The free series of concerts is sponsored by the Sheriff’s Support Group of Altadena, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and hosted by the Altadena Sheriff’s Station and Farnsworth Park. A full listing of concerts can be downloaded in pdf form.

I wish I had my own private jet and could fly out to Altadena on weekends for the summer concert series. The shows you have written about sound like a lot of fun.
