Detroit’s $21-million construction of the Ferry, cruise-ship terminal project located on the riverfront near the Renaissance Center, got a hard-hat visit from U.S. Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood today.

LaHood said the terminal building will be an 8,000 square foot building and should be finished by spring.

The construction on the new wharf will begin as soon as the finishing touches are made to the terminal building.

The city is getting $7.1 million in federal recovery money for the passenger terminal and public dock on the Detroit River.

The construction on the terminal LaHood believes is a big part of the revitalization effort for Detroit and is expected to create approximately 350 jobs.

Senator Carl Levin said people are going to be able to come to Detroit across the river, up the river, down the river . . just the way the first visitors did 300 years ago.

LaHood said the project is evidence that President Barack Obama’s stimulus spending plan is working.

While in Michigan, LaHood is meeting with General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC officials for briefings on safety technology the automakers are developing.

On Tuesday, LaHood is scheduled to defend the Obama administration’s economic stimulus program in an address to the Detroit Economic Club.

The leaders who joined LaHood on the tour, Senators, Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, Reps. John Dingell and Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick and Michigan Transportation Director Kirk Steudel say they join LaHood's vision for Detroit to be a Midwest cruise-ship capital.
