If you shop in New Hanover, Onslow or Wilkes Counties, you will pay a little more in sales tax starting on October 1, 2010. These three counties will join 12 other North Carolina counties to increase their local rate of sales and use tax be 2.25%.
Add the local sales tax rates to the state’s 5.75% and the sales tax in New Hanover, Onslow and Wilkes Counties will become 8%. The additional .25% is designed to give the counties additional revenue to assist with shrinking funds and increase budget deficits.
The additional .25% applies towards sales of tangible personal property, some digital property, as well as other transactions. It does not apply to food sales subjected to the 2% tax or construction materials for projects awarded by October 1, 2010.
New Hanover, Onslow and Wilkes Counties are just the most recent counties to adopt the additional .25% local sales and use tax increase. Hertford, Lee, Randolph and Rowan Counties’ additional .25% sales tax increase went into affect on July 1, 2010.
Currently, Mecklenburg County is the only county in North Carolina that has a sales tax higher than 8%. The local sales and use tax is 2.5% in Mecklenburg County making the combined sales tax there 8.25%. The remaining 48 counties have a 2% local sales tax rate and a 7.75% combined sales tax rate.
