Children all over the world are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus. Thanks to NORAD, we are able to track the big man’s journey as he works tirelessly through the night of Christmas Eve dropping gifts to good girls and boys.
NORAD, North American Aerospace Defense Command, is a United States - Canadian military organization responsible for the aerospace and maritime defense of the two countries. In addition to keeping an eye on the skies and waterways of the U.S. and Canada to ensure our safety, the men and women of NORAD are responsible for tracking Santa’s Christmas Eve journey.
See pictures of Santa's 2008 Christmas Eve journey below.
For more than 50 years, parents and children have relied on the organization to provide detailed updates of St. Nicholas’ selfless expedition.
NORAD currently uses 4 high tech tracking systems including radar, satellites, Santa Cams, and fighter jets. Thanks to the North Warning System, which is a powerful radar system, NORAD is alerted as soon as Santa lifts off from his home at the North Pole. Rudolph’s nose helps the satellites locate the gift-filled sleigh and high speed digital cameras called Santa Cams capture videos of Santa and his flying reindeer as they zoom through the night sky. Fighter jets welcome Santa once he reaches North America.
Parents and children can log onto the NORAD Santa Tracker to watch Santa Claus’ magical journey. If preferred, children can call 1-877-HI-NORAD to talk to a NORAD staff member who will be able to relay Santa’s location. Staff members can also be reached at noradtrackssanta@gmail.com.
Santa cannot arrive until children are fast asleep so an early bed time is recommended. Children may leave a special snack for the big man. His reindeer, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and Rudolph also enjoy special treats as they travel across the globe.
